This tree started life straight . It isn't a bent variety. It's a hawthorn growing on an exposed hillside on the South Downs. It has been contorted by the prevailing wind from the sea.
We too acquire bends and can become stooped, not because we were born to be crooked but due to habit. Sometimes the remedy is as simple as recognising and then stopping the habit. This would allow us to function in an efficient upright position, as this tree would do if only that wind would stop blowing.
It's simple; but not necessarily easy. Alexander Technique helps the student to identify unhelpful habits, prevent them in the moment and allow for more balanced and easeful movement.
